The Old School Holmbridge">Map of Holmbridge and Holmfirth
One of the reasons Last of the Summer Wine is so popular is because of its beautiful setting in the South Pennines. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and very close to the Peak District National Park.
There are large unspoilt moors and dales, over and around which are a large number of public footpaths, catering for all levels of ability. There are five reservoirs/ nature reserves within walking distance of our house and more a short drive away. In the valleys there are a few remaining Wool and Cotton mills, reminders of the first Industrial Revolution. The money cotton and wool bought to the region has left a legacy of grand houses and architecture in nearby towns and cities.
Huddersfield is 5 miles away with all the leisure amenities of a large bustling town including swimming pools, multiplex cinema, bowling alleys, plenty of restaurants and a busy shopping area with all the best known high street shops and a few not so well known. Did you know that Rugby league has it origins in a meeting in the George Hotel in Huddersfield?! Also within 20 miles are Leeds, Manchester, Bradford and Sheffield.
If you prefer to stay closer to home (no pun intended), Holmfirth has lots to offer. There are film location tours throughout the year and lots of alleyways and side streets to explore. There are galleries, artists studios, bookshops, and numerous other independant retailers in our vibrant Market Town. Holmfirth has a variety of different restaurants, a riverside pub and two toy shops! There is also a general market every Thursday, a craft market on a Saturday, and on the third Sunday of every month a farmers market.
Local Attractions include: Booth House Galley, Cannon Hall Farm, Coast to Coast walk, Huddersfield Art Gallery, Kirklees Light Railway, National Coal Mining Museum, Nostell Priory, Oakwell Hall Counrty Park, Red House Museum, Piece Hall, Royal Armouries Museum, Tolson Memorial Museum, Yorkshire Sulpture Park.
